At age 72, I am planning to walk across American to bring awareness of how exercise etc. can help bring about a healthier heart and vascular system, lower blood pressure, etc., and to raise funds, as well, for the American Heart Association. I welcome you to follow me on my journey! My plan for 2010 is to walk from Lewes, DE to St. Louis, MO or further if possible. In 2005 I was leading a sedentary life and weighed 201 lbs. I started walking and then running and lost 36 lbs, significantly lowered my blood pressure, my bad cholesterol, and raised my good cholesterol equally. My journey will commence on or about April 30th. Help the A.H.A. by donating thru the web site: Michianaheartwalk.kintera.org/johnwalksamerica. If all goes well I hope to be in St. Louis sometime in September 2010.

Thursday, October 7th

Finally the Golden Eagle Ferry and the crossing of the Mississippi to the flat land of MO, at least for a while. It did not last!
A view from the road between Mozier and Golden Eagle, IL
The road south of Mozier, IL
In the Baytown Guesthouse plotting my course.
Steamboats used to unload here in Mozier across from where I stayed, back in the days of the steamboats. Hard to believe that Ron and Betty had their houses raised up so that the flood water did not come in their doors.
Baytown Guest House in Mozier, IL, my last overnight stop before going across into MO. Betty and Ron Wendt are the owners. Extremely nice place and extremely nice people.
Taken in Fatboys Restaurant in Kinderhook, IL. A great stop for food and drinks. Real nice people. Middle A. J. the owner, on the right is Donnie and on the left is Elmo. I think I got it right, if not I am sorry. In any case they know who they are.
A stretch of I 72, the only way for a biker to cross the Mississippi into Hannibal, MO from the IL side. Rode over and back, kind of scary. I am told the only Interstate highway you are allowed to ride a bike on in IL and probably MO also.
