At age 72, I am planning to walk across American to bring awareness of how exercise etc. can help bring about a healthier heart and vascular system, lower blood pressure, etc., and to raise funds, as well, for the American Heart Association. I welcome you to follow me on my journey! My plan for 2010 is to walk from Lewes, DE to St. Louis, MO or further if possible. In 2005 I was leading a sedentary life and weighed 201 lbs. I started walking and then running and lost 36 lbs, significantly lowered my blood pressure, my bad cholesterol, and raised my good cholesterol equally. My journey will commence on or about April 30th. Help the A.H.A. by donating thru the web site: Michianaheartwalk.kintera.org/johnwalksamerica. If all goes well I hope to be in St. Louis sometime in September 2010.

17 1/2 miles walked in the last 4 days. I believe if you add up all the miles I have walked this year, in Florida, KY, Mexico and around Plymouth, as well as on the ADT trip I am around 1000 miles so far this year. Way behind where I wanted to be, but I can't change that. Looking forward to several hundred more at home and several hundred back on the ADT.

These were discovered in our yard. We did not plant them, must be birds dropping seeds. They are quite large hibiscus plants. There are many buds, which is good as the flowers only last a day or a day and a half. My wife originally was going to pull the plants as she thought them to be weeds.

Enjoy summer, we will soon be seeing scenes like these. Not that it would be a bad thing. Fall is a wonderful time to take long walks through the woods and along rural roads. But don't wait until fall to walk, start now.

Saturday, July 24th

Walked 3 miles early AM. Worked on my son's house for 9 hours, built a half wall around his range, paneled one side, tiled the other. Jacked up his front porch and installed a new beam. Cleaned part of his garage. Got rained on. Took my wife out to dinner, left the moon roof open on her car, really rained in. But it was a good meal and good to spend some time with her. Other than that a rather uneventful day. Hope yours was great!

Another day in paradise, it is going to be a glorious day. I walked 4 miles with Shelly this AM. What an awesome dog she is! Carried my customary 20 oz. coffee from Casey's General Store. What a great day.
Take a walk and enjoy it, the sights and sounds. In the process you will be doing your heart a big favor.

Tuesday. July 20th

Several things come to mind: I keep hearing, on the news, about diet drugs, their dangers, their ability to make people lose weight and so on. I think that people do not need these drugs, they need will power to make changes in their lives, they need to not rely on artificial means to do the job that they themselves need to do. It is similar to part of the message put forth in the Bible Study session I attended last Sunday: Sometimes when we are faced with a difficult task, or a difficult decision we find a way to escape into a place where we do not have to do what is required to resolve the situation. We can escape by sitting down in front of the TV and letting our minds become occupied with the programs offered. I am guilty of this on many occasions. We can escape by expecting a short and painless remedy to our problems. Not putting forth the energy necessary to attain our goals. Losing weight is a hard process, it requires dedication and resolve. You cannot expect to lose weight merely thinking about it or by taking drugs to bypass the natural way to do so. Exercise and less calories in than calories out is a sure fire way to lose weight. My opinion! Works for me.

July 19th, Monday

Some sights along the road to Bremen, IN today. Crop duster and sunflowers. I am still walking 3 to 4 miles a day and am anticipating getting back to my long distance hike. Every road I am on I look at it closely and think if it would or would not be a good walking road. I think about wanting to get on the I and M Canal Tow Path in IL and walking that and on to the Mississippi. Also I would like to walk the Natchez Trace from Nashville to Natchez and the list goes on. There is so much to see and so may paths to take it is hard to decide which one is going to be the best.

Yesterday my wife and I attended church services at my son's church in Morton, IL We participated in a bible study group prior to the service. This is something I never do, but in this case I am glad I did. The ? was: have you had an experience in your life that proves to you that God exists? Well my response to that was: yes, everyday, when I get up and walk about, and look at nature, listen to birds singing, watch the sun come up and enjoy the marvels that surround us. These things were certainly not made
by man. The other people at the table all had some experience that validated God's existence to them. The sermon was quite instructive as well, it was about listening. Do we really listen when others talk to us, or are we so wrapped up in our own mind, formulating a response that we do not really hear what the other person is saying? Do we sometimes become so enthralled with the sound of our own voice that we can't wait to speak, thus only biding time until the other person quits talking. Guilty! When we do this we don't really hear what the other is trying to convey to us. And, sometimes, what others have to say is quite important. I guess the point is: pay attention, you just might learn something of value.

Sunday, July 18th

The first picture is a scene much prefered, the other two have many wind turbines in the background. My question becomes?? If you clear all the crop land in Illinois and cover the landscape with these wind turbines, will you produce enough power in one year to eliminate the use of oil for one day of that year. My guess would be No. It is a grand idea, but will it work and at what cost. There are always tradeoffs. Food or power? I would like to know the answer.

Drove to Peoria IL yesterday and back today. Passed through some of the best farm land in the country. The prairie land in this area always produces some scenes not previously revealed, even though I have drive this route 100s of times. The corn and beans are looking better than they have in years. All due to the great growing weather, rain and heat. My grand daughter, the youngest (14) going on 24 was in a play, her 31st I might add. Hence the purpose for the trip. Had a great time with our son, his wife, and the grand daughter.

Saturday, July 17th

It is such a pleasure to get up early every morning and take a 3 or 4 mile walk, listening to the myriad of bird songs, seeing the ground fog, watching the sun rise, and marveling at the greatness of nature. I feel cheated if I cannot do this each day. Life is good, live it richly!

Thursday, July 15th

Yes, all the pictures that I post, other than the ones with me in them, have been taken by me. A great invention - the digital camera. If I had all my digital photos on photo paper it would fill a couple of rooms.
