At age 72, I am planning to walk across American to bring awareness of how exercise etc. can help bring about a healthier heart and vascular system, lower blood pressure, etc., and to raise funds, as well, for the American Heart Association. I welcome you to follow me on my journey! My plan for 2010 is to walk from Lewes, DE to St. Louis, MO or further if possible. In 2005 I was leading a sedentary life and weighed 201 lbs. I started walking and then running and lost 36 lbs, significantly lowered my blood pressure, my bad cholesterol, and raised my good cholesterol equally. My journey will commence on or about April 30th. Help the A.H.A. by donating thru the web site: Michianaheartwalk.kintera.org/johnwalksamerica. If all goes well I hope to be in St. Louis sometime in September 2010.

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

4 1/4 miles this AM. 69 degrees. Low humidity. Good walking weather. Beautiful sky, with the sun lighting up the top of the clouds while the lower parts remained dark. No camera. So it goes.

Wednesday, August 25th

Last evening was so nice I took a 2 mile walk with Shelly. Walked 3 1/4 miles this AM, again with Shelly. She is shaping up, but still don't think she would stand for 100's of miles without being home. Take a walk today! There are things out there to see. I see things differently than Ronald Reagan who said, "A tree's a tree. How many more do you need to look at?" However, I agree with him when he said, "Don't be afraid to see what you see." Have a great day wherever you are.

Still Sunday, August 22nd

In addition to the 4 1/4 miles I walked this AM. I rode my bike 20 miles (yes a pedal bike, not a Harley) and after I got home decided I had not done enough for today so, I ran a slow 11 minute mile on the Jr. High track. Some would call that a jog vs. a run. Of course they probably are not 73 either. I need to get in shape, as am thinking of running in the annual Blueberry Stomp. I skipped last year due to my long recovery from pneumonia. I think my lungs were irreparably damaged to some extent, as I still don't have the staying power I did in "08 when I ran in about 20 + races. Surely someone out there wants to join me for next Sundays program??? Remember, your heart is counting on you to give it some work to do. I don't think it was put there to remain running on idle!

Sunday, August 22nd

La vida es corto, viva rico!
4 1/4 miles this AM. Cool morning.

Saturday, August 21st

Take a hike, ride a bike. Get some exercise. There is a lot to see that you cannot sitting on the couch or at 70 mph. Walked 3 miles the AM, in the rain, vinyl poncho which does not breathe and makes your body temperature feel like 150 degrees. Hot, Hot, hot! Hope to get in a bike ride this afternoon, weather permitting. Enjoy your day!

Friday, August 20th

3 3/4 miles this AM. Getting primed to receive my 5th rabies vaccine injection today. Sound like fun? Don't mess with bats, most of them have rabies. All in all a great day coming up. Since you are reading this I know you also woke up on the green side of the grass today. Enjoy the day!

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Time, like money, should be spent wisely. There is no infinite supply of either! Out the door at 5:45 am walked 3 1/2 miles. I would like someone to join me in my walks. Are there any hearty souls out there, that would like to enhance their cardio vascular system.

Wednesday, August 18th

3 miles this Am in a heavy sprinkle or a light rain, whichever you prefer. At any rate, it was somewhat damp. Quite pleasant despite that.

Tuesday, August 17th

Having a whale of a good time! Check out my cholesterol changes, brought about from my exercise program. You could have similar results. Proof that exercise is good for you.
Getting everything ready to take off on my walk right after labor day. Looking at all the maps, routes, etc. Tuning up all the electronic equipment, GPS, phones, chargers, etc. Crunch time is coming. Walked an additional 2 1/8th miles last evening and 3 1/4th this AM. I feel that I am ready to commit to 20 mile walks. Don't forget to work a walk into your schedules. It will do you a great deal of good. You might even enjoy it. Walked 2 1/2 miles additional this afternoon. Would have gone on for several more but was called in to work on a detention pond. And so it goes.

Monday, August 16th

Flying is more fun than walking, but not as healthy. Take a walk, your heart depends on it! Walked 3 miles this AM. Took a short bike ride yesterday afternoon for about an hour. I read in the paper yesterday that a man, his wife and two 10 year olds (twins) have now completed 2 and one half years into a three year ride from the north slope of Alaska to the southern tip of Argentina, 18,000 miles, yes that is 18,000 miles (thousand), makes me feel like a wimp.

Saturday, August 14th

The last two pictures somehow were downloaded and I can't figure out how to unload them so there they are, whaever they are. I took them, but I take a lot that are of no use. I guess it is to show the buds on aquatic plants that will later flower. I guess!
Superstition, Friday the 13 brings about bad things. I think I might believe it now. Tuesday night, my son and I disposed of a house bat. The remains were sent to the state for testing, the results were phoned to us late yesterday afternoon. Yes, you guessed it, it was positive for rabies. So, we had to go to the ER to begin the shot series. 3 shots, to begin with, then another Monday, another in 7 days, another in 14 days and another in 28 days. About 3 hours of our lives wasted at the ER, waiting. The male nurse there said, well what do you expect you come in without an appointment at a busy time. Well, it is news to me that you can anticipate an emergency and make appointments for treatment. Must be a new deal. The doctor told us that 90% of bats have rabies and he has treated a number of people in the last few weeks. So if you come in contact with a bat, you might want to think about treatment. Once you get rabies there is only one result - you are dead!!! Yes, I know there is one case of survival. But that is it: ONE! Between 40,000 and 70,000 people worldwide die from rabies each year. Most from unvaccinated dogs. However, given the fact that most bats carry rabies they may become a bigger problem in the future. Yes, I also know that they are a benefit in their insect eating role. I don't care, I hate them, they are nasty little creatures, who I choose not to let live in my house. Oh, by the way I walked another 4 1/2 miles.
