At age 72, I am planning to walk across American to bring awareness of how exercise etc. can help bring about a healthier heart and vascular system, lower blood pressure, etc., and to raise funds, as well, for the American Heart Association. I welcome you to follow me on my journey! My plan for 2010 is to walk from Lewes, DE to St. Louis, MO or further if possible. In 2005 I was leading a sedentary life and weighed 201 lbs. I started walking and then running and lost 36 lbs, significantly lowered my blood pressure, my bad cholesterol, and raised my good cholesterol equally. My journey will commence on or about April 30th. Help the A.H.A. by donating thru the web site: Michianaheartwalk.kintera.org/johnwalksamerica. If all goes well I hope to be in St. Louis sometime in September 2010.

If you want to know that you are really alive, fly this plane and do some loops and rolls, etc. It is quite an experience. I know, it has nothing to do with walking, but I thought I would throw it in anyway. The whole point is: just because you are getting older does not mean you cannot get out and do stuff! Enjoy life, you are dead for a long time!

Wednesday and Thursday the 23rd and 24th

Today is our anniversary. 51 years of marriage (to the same people). Had an interview on WTCA AM1050 yesterday. I think it went well, but that is not for me to say. Now have poison ivy on my arms and, believe it or not, on the bottom of my right foot. How that got there I do not know. Another doctor visit today for results of a CT Scan. Only added 3 1/2 miles.

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Walked my customary morning 4 miles. Still stalled, working on some medical issues and monetary ones as well. Weight this am 159, my goal will be 155, down from an all time high of 214. I once made a bet with my father in law back when I was first married and skinny that I would never weight 200 or over, at that time I probably weighed around 150. I bet him that if I reached 200 I would paint his house, well I finally lost. Either because he was a good guy or had no faith in my painting ability he let me off the hook. Later, I did install siding on another house for him. Take your heart for a walk today. It is really easy.

Only was able to walk 2 miles today, due to rain, then Cardiologist appointment. Check out how walking can affect your cholesterol and triglyceride levels, you will see a remarkable drop in Bad (LDL) and Triglyceride levels and a rise in the good (HDL) level. Any questions? Does exercise (walking) act as a good influence on your Cholesterol and Triglycerides or what? So why don't you all get out and join me in walking for your hearts sake. Also note the picture of the Plymouth City Building, this is where I hit the 500 mile mark.

Sunday, June 20th

Have a great day!!
Saturday and Sunday I added 10 1/4 miles to the total. Hope to get back in high gear soon. Even if I have to lay out for a couple of months I plan to walk at least 4 miles a day to keep the old ticker ticking. Still looking for a major contributor to fund my walk. Are there any out there? Went to my 55th class reunion, it was good to see and talk with the 22 others that came. Always good to see old friends.

At 10:30 AM today I hit the 500 mile mark. 500 miles in 51 days, no world record, but a milestone in my life.

Thursday, June 17th

4 1/2 miles today. I believe that I am at 498 so far. I will hit 500 tomorrow for sure. Have a busy day though. Doctors visits, alumni banquet, some family stuff, and so on.

Wednesday, June 16th

Have a good day! And thanks for your support and kind thoughts.

Yesterday and today I walked a combination of 8 3/4 miles. This is the week I have my physicals and class reunion. Tomorrow I should walk enough to hit 500 miles for the month and a half that I have been walking for the AHA. Should have been 750, but things just did not work as planned. There is nothing I can do about that. So I will just go on as best I can and see what happens. Need to find some sponsors or I will have to take some time off.

No takers on the last identification quiz. Either no one knows or they don't want to walk with me! Try this one. Taken in Maryland earlier this year.
Well, I did walk further today, but not by much. 8 1/2 miles. Hopefully I can get in a few days that are twice that yet this week. Closing in on the magic 500 mile number. 484 3/4.

Sunday, June 13, 2010

Sunday, June 13th

Walked 8 miles today. Total: 476 1/4. Hopefully will be able to walk more than that tomorrow. We shall see.

Saturday, June 12, 2010

Informational note. June 12th

I am down to 161 lbs. Down from an all time high of 214 and from 201 in 2005. I have not weighed this little since around 1970. And I still have a little roll of fat around the mid section. Wonder when that will go away? I will keep walking and try to find out.

Saturday, June 12 th

OK, what is it. You will win a day of walking with me if you guess correctly! email me: jrwraight@hotmail.com
Rolling farm land in north central Indiana.
Walked a short 7 3/4 miles today. Would have done more but thunderstorms chased me off the road. Had lunch in a small cemetery out in the country. Power bar, apple and beef jerky. Wow!! Walked through some rolling farm land, picture attached. Also, I have added a picture of a flower or whatever it is. If you can identify it, you will be awarded a free day of walking with me. Come on now, lets have your best shot. I know you want to walk with me. Total mileage: 468 1/4 miles.

Friday, June 11, 2010

Was only able to squeeze in 6 1/2 miles today. Met people I knew and have not seen for a long while, sooo, we had to talk. Mileage to date = 460 1/2, got to get to that 500 number before long. The next 500 will surely be much easier!!?? Hope to have a good walking day tomorrow. Somehow I was able to patch son Michael's tin porch roof today. DON'T FORGET TO TAKE A WALK, YOUR HEART IS COUNTING ON IT! No pictures today!

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Total mileage to date: 454 - tomorrow is another day!! Take a walk, I am!
Today I walked 15.50 miles. The walk started out to follow the ADT from Miami County, IN into and through part of Fulton County, IN. However, I discovered that part of the Nickel Plate Trail was paved and the other part had the limestone base down, so I decided to walk that. I got on at Deedsville, IN an unpaved portion of the trail and walked north to Rochester, IN. At about mile 3 I ran into the paving crew. It was the company Phend & Brown from Milford, IN, a company I had used many times in my construction days. I was able to walk around the machinery and trucks and continue on my way. One picture of the unpaved portion and one of the machine putting down the asphalt are attached. Closer to Rochester I met a man, his wife and young child. Mr. Terry Lee and his wife and daughter. Small world that it is Mrs. Lee was meeting my niece later in the day. I understand that Mr.Lee was one of the prime movers in getting the trail done. It is going to be a great trail running from Rochester to Peru, about 21 miles. I then walked through Rochester, stopping at the Rochester Sentinel where I talked about my walk with the editor, Mr. Bill Wilson. He ask me which way I was going when I left town, and I showed him on my maps. He said that he would have a photographer track me down for some pictures, and that I should get him some information on my walk. Which I will do. The town was getting ready for the annual Round Barn Festival with booths in the streets and all that goes with such festive events. I was at the far edge of town when Mike the photographer caught up with me and did his thing. Then across the busy highway and another mile and that ended the walk for today. One of the pictures attached is me on the new trail, one of the front of the office of the orthopedic surgeon who puts me back together on a somewhat regular basis, so I can do what I do.

This sign has always puzzled me. Does it mean no trespassing after darkness is over or during darkness? And does it further mean it is OK to trespass any other time or does the word change to mean entering is something other than trespassing at the period not covered by after dark?? It is at the entrance to Oak Hill Cemetary in Plymouth.

This is a picture of our beautiful old courthouse, the picture above is from another side showing how beautiful old buildings can be made aesthetically void, no longer of any value as a historical building.
Walked around town again today 8 1/2 miles, added to yesterday's 5 I now have 438 1/2 miles walked for the heart walk. Tomorrow, all things being favorable, I plan to go south to begin the second leg of the cross Indiana walk, this time following the northern route. I will begin east of US 31 somewhere around Peru, IN and walk northwest. Since I quit the southern route west of US 31 I think the miles covered will be close to equal. Well, I am going to give it a shot. I just have to post a couple more pictures as well. Sorry!

Shelly. Doing what she seems to do best! RELAXING!!!!
The old High School (Lincoln High School) more commonly referred to as PHS, Plymouth High School)where I was a proud graduate in 1955. Having spent 5 years in this well constructed building. One year in junior high and 4 in high school. The bell is from the old Washington School. Cast in 1874.
St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
To some it is just a weed. But look closer, at the intricate design and the beauty it displays.
A portion of the Greenway Trail along the Yellow River. Plymouth, IN
Took a short 5 mile walk around the old home town this AM. Walked the 2 mile Plymouth Greenway Trails, through Centennial Park, Magnetic Park, and Founders Park, as well as some of the streets around town. I am posting a couple of pictures.

Monday, June 7th

Very friendly place. Good food!

Walked from Plymouth, IN to Bourbon, IN through Inwood, IN an 11 mile walk. Walked on what is called Old US 30, or the Historic Lincoln Highway. This is the highway, or trail that my ancestors followed from Lancaster County, PA to get west, sometime in the early 1800's. The Snyder family. Light back pack, what a relief. I walked part way back to Plymouth. Total mileage to date = 425. Attaching some pictures. One is an example of preserved Americana, one is a picture of the restaurant where I had lunch in Bourbon, where I might add a man, two weeks ago, stopped on his walk across America. A friendly place with good food. The other picture speaks to me, if you rotate it, it asks are you on the right track?? The first has been rotated, the second is as it appears. In limbo, waiting to get better and for divine intervention as to what direction to take. Peace, John
